School Scandals USA: 2011, March

Every living creature on Earth - from the lowly microscopic bacteria to the mighty human being - is continuously learning new information from the moment it is born until the moment it dies. Sadly, a handful of school teachers, teachers' unions and Professors of Education can defeat this natural instinct to learn new information.

Unfortunately for America's public school students, identifying and removing this small minority of abusive teachers, incompetent principals, greedy administrators and spendthrift school boards is very difficult. Public school children and their parents may also contend with teacher sloth, arrogance, prejudices, carelessness, power grabs, status battles, sexual desires, criminal immorality and last, but certainly not least, the greed of the teachers' unions.

The American mass media too rarely questions the educational establishment about their philosophies, theories, organizations, statements, actions, beliefs or competence. Journalists tend to view educators as compatriots who share their desire to properly inform America's half-ignorant, prejudiced and selfish citizen masses. In addition, the mass media and the educational institutions tend to share economic, educational, political and social backgrounds. Finally, when all else fails, look for educators to seek financial income and/or careers in the media ... and the members of the media to seek financial income and/or careers in educational institutions.

Of course, all of these shared interests, between the American journalistic media and the American educational establishment, hardly encourages either one to view the other with anything like skepticism.

Fortunately for America's beleaguered children, parents and taxpayers, we can utilize the Internet for investigating, analyzing and reporting upon America's public schools (and colleges) ... and most especially, the personnel who staff and lead them. As a former public school student, father of eight public school students and American taxpayer, I have a vested interest in revealing the seamier side of American public education. I believe that many parents, students and taxpayers share my interest in looking behind the benign public mask of America's public schools.

When it comes to America's educational felons, fools and scoundrels, you can rely upon the frequent reports provided by SCHOOL SCANDALS USA.

Accused: Middle school teacher Laura Dyar of Madison, GA.

A 26-year-old middle school teacher in Madison, GA has a yen for men. Unfortunately, Laura Dyar is apparently unable to date young men of adult years, so she has resorted to hooking up with a middle school boy.

Accused: Denisi Munoz of San Antonio, TX.

A 25-year-old high school dance teacher (Editor: A high school 'dance teacher' ?!?) has been arrested for having an inappropriate relationship with one of her male high school students.

Accused: William Buzzell of Rossford, OH.

An elementary school principal of the Glenwood Elementary School, near Toledo, has been arrested for 'pandering' (selling) pornographic images of a minor. The school superintendant has placed William Buzzell on 'paid administrative leave'.

Accused: Shantell Bell of Highland Park, MI.

Charter School treasurer Shantell Bell has been arrested for embezzling $25,000 from the school's financial account. She is alleged to have used the money to help her to buy a house in Detroit. Her attorney says she is innocent and the victim of a vindictive ex-boyfriend.

Latest High School Graduation Rates, by State

Approximately 75% of American public high school students do successfully complete their public schooling and graduate, according to the most recent report of the U.S. Department of Education.

The two highest states for successful graduation are Wisconsin and Vermont. The lowest state is Nevada, which competes with the District of Columbia for the lowest American public high school graduation rate.

Accused: Cedric Cradle of Churchland, VA.

High school football coach and teacher Cedric Cradle is alleged to have engaged in sexual relations with a 16-year-old female student, during school hours.

Accused: High school teacher Carrie Shafer of Louisville, KY.

Anatomy teacher Carrie Shafer fouled this up in so many ways. Let us count the ways:

First, she agreed to provide private anatomy lessons for one of her 17-year-old high school students, thereby breaking Kentucky law. Second, she decided to give these lessons to her male student in her own car, while illegally parked, thereby assuring herself some extra attention from any patrolling police officer. Third, both the law and the sordid publicity have forced her to immediately resign her teaching position. Fourth, Kentucky law and this bad publicity will ensure she is never able to return to teaching again. Fifth, she is named 'Mrs. Shafer' in the student video still, which is now in all of the area news media, thereby making her marriage a well-publicized train wreck.

Not bad for one evening's worth of bad decision-making.
